Note, much of this guidance predates the Revised 508 Standards. For example, they may not be structured so theyre accessible to a screen reader. The resources in this section were developed by Federal agencies, and shared here for your convenience. Many older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards. Simple language makes your document accessible to people.

Today, more than 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance health and safety, strengthen market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. Doing this will help your document support as many users as possible and can future-proof your. Governments can increase the opportunity for everyone to participate fully in civic life by making their e-government services accessibleincluding requiring documents, presentations, web content, applications, and software solutions be created and maintained consistent with applicable accessibility guidelines.

If using an authoring tool, make sure the tool is capable of generating accessible PDF documents that conform to PDF/UA (some do not). ASTM International is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of voluntary consensus standards.

When generating PDF documents through conversion from another format, or through an automated tool, ensure the resulting PDF file is properly tagged to support accessibility. Whereas the Section 508 accessibility standards currently do not provide specific technical guidance on what constitutes an accessible electronic document, the agency uses the following guides to author and test Word, PowerPoint, Excel and PDF documents for accessibility.
